Office of Research Development

The Office of Research Development (ORD) within the Office of Research Strategy coordinates university-wide research development and collaboration activities with an emphasis on scholarship that crosses multiple academic units. Working with other units, ORD provides support and programming to facilitate research partnerships, support strategic planning, identify funding opportunities, form interdisciplinary collaborations, and, through the Training Grant Support Office, pursue large institutional training awards.

Support & Programming

GrantForward uses specialized technology to constantly update an extensive database of sponsors and funding opportunities, allowing thousands of grant opportunities to be gathered from over 30,000 US sponsors. Access to this service is sponsored by the Office of the Senior Vice President for Research.

Halo is a research partnering platform designed to allow companies actively seeking new research and innovation in their fields to connect to the world's brain trust of scientists.  This resource is highly recommended for Emory researchers seeking to partner with private industry on industry-defined R&D projects.

ORD curates funding opportunities for Key Research Areas at Emory.

ORD coordinates with other units to manage internal competitions for limited submissions opportunities. ORD coordinates federal limited submission opportunities, with the exception of certain programs which are coordinated through the Office of the Provost. The Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations (OCFR) coordinates limited submissions for corporations, foundations, and private non-profit organizations. Limited submission opportunities are posted on InfoReady and announced on our funding page as well as through newsletters.

Constructive Collisions is an event series that promotes research collaboration among faculty, researchers, and external partners. The series offers a variety of immersive activities including, structured networking, lightning talks, roundtable discussions, and pitch sessions. Each semester several Constructive Collisions are organized around different topics. ORD welcomes opportunities to partner with Emory’s centers, institutes, and university-wide initiatives to co-organize events. ORD convenes Emory’s Research Development Community (RDC). The RDC seeks to build and maintain a research development network across campus to identify and share resources and opportunities in support of the growth of Emory’s research enterprise. Individuals who practice research development in any form from any unit within Emory are invited to join. To join the RDC, email ResearchDevelopment@emory.edu.

Competitive intelligence refers to the ethical collection and analysis of information, which informs decision-making for the research enterprise. ORD provides actionable insights and future-looking intelligence on programs, sponsors, and topics to help Emory continue to be highly competitive when seeking research funding and/or increase our position relative to peers and other research organizations. PURSUE: Proposals for Unique Research Supports for Scholarly and University Endeavors

ORD has expanded proposal development support to include 1:1 support for Assistant and Associate Professors (and equivalent ranks across schools) who are seeking funding from new opportunities to submit grant proposals.

The PURSUE program supports:

  • 1-on-1 intake meetings
  • Program-specific proposal development toolkits
  • Strategic proposal review
  • Additional standalone RD resources (to be developed)

ORD provides comprehensive proposal development support in partnership with Research Administration Services (RAS) to Emory faculty who are preparing “mega” proposals. Generally, these proposals request $10M or more from the sponsor, span multiple academic units, include external partners, and have complex budgets. Exceptions for other high priority proposals that fall below the $10M threshold may be requested by the lead academic unit’s Associate Dean for Research or equivalent.
