Research impact refers to the real-world benefits stemming from research, scholarly, and creative activities. Achieving impact in the real-world can take years and often involves partners who utilize and apply the insights generated from research.
Why is Research Impact important?
Research impact is central to Emory’s mission to "… apply knowledge in the service of humanity.” Articulating and communicating stories involving research impact can help demonstrate its relevance and value to society, justify public funding, and ultimately contribute to addressing societal issues by translating knowledge into actionable solutions.
How does Research Impact related to public scholarship, community engagement, and science communication?
Research impact, public scholarship, community engagement, and science communication are related but distinct terms. We acknowledge the overlap in these concepts and actively work university-wide to coordinate on related efforts.
How does Research Impact relate to journals, citations, and my H-index?
Research impact is about real-world benefits. Generally, publishing in a high impact factor journal, having many citations, and your H-index approximate attention from the academic community. Attention from the academic community may eventually result in research impact but not necessarily.
